Stepney City Farm

This class is aimed to give children (5-12yrs) from all backgrounds  a chance to experiment, have fun and get creative in abstract artist Georgie Mason's studio on Stepney City Farm. 

Georgie believes learning to explore and follow one's intuition from a young age is crucial to a healthy and rich development into adulthood. This class provides a safe space for children to get messy, meet others, be in a rural environment and most importantly, be themselves :)

The class is 2 hours long and begins with a wander round the farm, sketching things we see including the animals. Then we will head into the studio and start with some warm up exercises - for example expressive mark making to various different styles of music, collaborative pieces aka 'Squiggle Drawings', and drawing each other without taking the pen off the page - all great ice-breakers :)

Then we will work on a larger collaborative piece inspired by the farm - either the animals or the plants/trees. Finally we will each work on our own piece inspired by what we've learnt. 

Children will be able to take home a final piece that they have created on paper - I can provide a link to affordable frames if you require.

Georgie has taught art to children for over 10 years in various locations across the UK. She loves working with kids and is hugely inspired by their energy and imagination.  She looks forward to welcoming your children to the studio.

**The Class**

**Who?**
These classes are aimed at anyone - individuals, couples, friends, birthday parties, hen nights -  who would like to get creative but lacks either the space, materials or motivation to get started.  

**What?**
Whether you want to paint a picture for your wall, make something for a friend, replicate a famous work or just reconnect with your creative side, this is a space you can do just that.   Each month there will be a loose theme to help you find inspiration, and you will receive an email with some more information around this theme before your class. Don't worry, if you already have an idea that's fine too. 

The class is suitable for any level*, from complete beginners to more experienced artists: the maximum class size is six so Georgie is able to guide you accordingly to suit your needs.  No need to feel nervous or intimidated by the idea of painting in front of people - this is a non-judgemental space and it's mostly about having fun!

**How does it work?**

On arrival, Georgie will set you up with a canvas and begin with some mindfulness, art or literature linked to the month's theme to get you feeling inspired.  You can then go for a walk around the farm to salvage materials for texture, or just soak up the nature, before getting stuck into your piece. 

Georgie will talk you through the process of building texture, colour mixing, mark-making and learning how to construct a good composition.  She will guide you through the process of creating your personal artwork, with teaching tips along the way.  Georgie will encourage detachment from the inner perfectionist that tells us we should be ‘good’ (make something technically skilled or aesthetically perfect), and instead just enjoy the process and find flow.  

**Why?**
Creativity is proven to decrease anxiety, decrease your heart rate, boost mood and regulate the nervous system - and being on the farm is the perfect petri dish to breed creative ideas because being surrounded by green makes us feel safe on a primal level.  As Professor Qing Li, author of 'Shinrin-yoku' says, 'Where there is green there is water. And where there is water, we can find food. When the world around us contains plenty of green, we can relax.'

You will leave with a sense of clarity, creativity and calm, setting you up for a balanced and fulfilling week ahead.

You can reschedule or cancel your class (with a full refund) provided I am given at least 7 days' notice before your class date. Unfortunately, I am unable to refund any bookings if less than 7 days' notice is given.

If you want to book a private session of between 6-10 people you can do so on Obby, however if you would like a smaller group (between 2-5 people) please just get in touch to arrange directly. For private groups children aged 5+ are welcome.

I loved my painting session with Georgie. She is warm, friendly, helpful and inspiring. We had a good chat about ideas for my painting and she gave me lots of ideas that aided my own creativity (I may have never thought to add texture with polyfilla otherwise!). The studio itself is in a lovely setting overlooking the farm with pigs, goats and hens. There is a farmers market too with lots of tasty offerings. Definitely an experience to be repeated, very calming and hugely enjoyable!

Great activity for a Saturday, I really enjoyed myself! Georgie is super helpful with showing you different painting techniques while letting you do your thing and be creative. Lots of different colours and canvasses to choose from. The venue (Stepney City Farm) is also really nice and has lots of animals, plants and a farmer's market.

The venue is really lovely in the Stepney City Farm.  The studio is very bright and filled with art and there is a farmer's market every Saturday.  The farm also has a terrific on-site cafe with a very healthy menu and great food.  Georgie is just super and an accomplished artist who clearly loves the artistic process and inspires the students to try new things.  I had some fine art training many years ago so I wanted a studio where I could go and get some inspiration and guidance in picking up painting again.  Georgie has been really helpful in getting me started again and I've gone multiple times to work on different pieces.  I've had a chance to see her work with different groups of students on Saturdays and everyone has a great time with the painting and meeting new folks.  I have nothing but good things to about the class and Georgie's instruction.

Georgie is a wonderful teacher, who allows you to form your own ideas and then gently nurdles you toward it. You can turn up with an idea in your head of what you want to paint or you can just go with the flow when you arrive and “intuitively paint” which is what the class is all about. Im primarily a photographer who’s recently taken to drawing. My three children decided I needed to broaden my horizons and sample painting and so they gifted a session with Georgie at her studio at Stepney City Farm.
Georgie exudes kindness and mindfulness, and is warm and welcoming. She’s at one with nature and a wonderfully talented artist, and she combines both to create wondrous works. Her studio is full of inspiring works, materials and books and it’s impossible not to be positively encouraged by both her and her studio. 
I’ve come away from the class full of enthusiasm and an eagerness to develop my painting skills further and I’d firmly recommend a session with Georgie if like me, you need that gentle nudge to push out a personal boundary. I’d imagine that seasoned artists would also be inspired by Georgie’s approach to her art and use of different materials including many from the farm itself.
The farm is a wonderful oasis in London and a brilliant place to visit especially with your loving children!

I thoroughly recommend spending a few hours with Georgie and her beautiful creations in her studio @ Stepney Farm. My father and I had a wonderful time learning new techniques, improvising with colour and texture and simply having fun. This was a relaxed, friendly class in a gorgeous setting. As well as painting our own canvas (with the freedom to depict whatever you liked on the theme of ‘hope’), this varied session blended together mindfulness and a few sketching ‘warm up’ tasks around the farm. Georgie demonstrates some mixed media / texture techniques but really encourages you to express ourselves with no ‘right or wrong’, which makes the class feel accessible even to total beginners. Chatting with the other students in the friendly group of six was also a highlight. What a therapeutic and and inspiring way to spend a Saturday!

Excellent experience and highly recommended to anyone! The day was perfectly organised, relaxing atmosphere, Georgie was perfect host. My masterpiece was not as VanGogh but I have enjoyed the attempt!

Really lovely and productive creative session with Georgie. She made us all feel welcome. Took us through relevant basics of painting, leaving us enough time to have a go. She encouraged conversation so we got to know one another and became a cohesive group. The venue was lovely too, calming, peaceful.

I had the most beautiful evening, painting with Georgie and other attendees at the farm. It was great to have an inner-city escape and immerse myself in nature and art. Georgie showed us how to use different techniques and encouraged us to paint freely without thinking too much. I will definitely be back!
